Abseiling Cape Town Overview
What Is Abseiling Cape Town?
Abseiling is an adventure sport that involves descending a rock face or steep slope using a rope. Abseiling Cape Town is an outdoor recreation tourism company that offers abseiling in Cape Town for people of all ages.
This adventure is an ideal activity for individuals, families and companies to do as a team building exercise. Abseiling is also an excellent way for people to find out if they like rock climbing or not, before they move on to more extreme activities such as canyoning or caving.
Who Can Abseil?
People of all ages and fitness levels can take part as long as they are fit enough to walk unaided (you don’t have to be an athlete). If you are a nervous type who doesn’t like heights, abseiling may not be for you!
A group of abseilers (maximum 8) and 1 guide travel to the site by car. People who wish to abseil need to be physically fit and healthy; if you suffer from a heart condition, epilepsy, high blood pressure or vertigo we strongly advise you not to participate.
Upon arrival at the site, our guide will brief participants on how to abseil properly and safely, before people are roped up and start an exhilarating descent into the gorge.
Sort Of Sites To Abseil
We visit two types of sites; coastal cliffs (such as Chapman’s Peak) and inland gorges. We visit two types of sites; coastal cliffs (such as Chapman’s Peak) and inland gorges.
One day we may abseil down the spectacular Clifton beach in Cape Town, while another day we might descend into a 200-meter gorge in the Hinterlands. No experience is necessary to take part and it’s an excellent way to see some of South Africa’s natural beauty.
Way To Abseil
At the site, our guide will fix two ropes into place using a combination of bolts and natural anchors. Our experienced climbers will set up a belay, which is a system that secures the rope so that you can abseil safely.
The abseiling ropes are generally 80-100 meters long and end 5 to 10 meters from the ground. We use a variety of different descents for our clients, including:
• A straight shoot down a sheer rock face.
• A series of smaller drops, where the rope runs over an edge before descending down a slope.
• A combination of a straight shoot and an edge drop to ensure a varied experience for clients.
At the bottom, we then replace our ropes and climb back up to the top ready for another descent. People are then attached to the ropes using a descender device, which plays out the rope as people descend.
People start by facing away from the rock so they control their descent by leaning back. As people build more confidence, they can try descending side-on or on all fours.
It is important to point out that even though you are attached to a rope, it has been placed in a safe place by our highly-experienced group. It is still the responsibility of each participant to make sure they abseil properly and safely.
What To Wear
We recommend people wear sturdy walking shoes, a hat and suitable clothing for the time of year (e.g. a rainproof jacket). Comfortable clothes are essential as it can get hot, while loose fitting clothes will help minimise the risk of trip hazards caused by restrictive clothing.
We also recommend that people bring a camera, hat, sunscreen and personal medical kit if necessary. A small backpack or bum bag is useful to carry these items in.
Abseiling Time
When should we abseil? You have never done abseiling before and have no idea how to go about it. The best time to do Abseiling is in the summer months as this is when there are not many rainy days.
The winter months from June up until August receive a lot of rain, so if you want to make sure that you can do abseil then choose one of the other three seasons (spring, autumn or winter).
If you’re going on a weekend then try and avoid weekends as they tend to be quite busy with people doing activities such as hiking or mountain biking. If possible it’s also better if you avoid public holidays because these will be busier too!
If you’re going to do Abseiling then that means you’re probably going to be on holiday in the Western Cape. In that case, it might be a good idea for you to visit one of the many beautiful World Heritage Sites here in South Africa. You could try and make a whole trip out of it by doing some other activities while you are in the area.
How long does abseiling mountain take? The duration of the time to Abseil will depend on how far you are going, high up or down. It can take anywhere from one hour to five hours. It will take about 1 hour of descent time to get down into the gorge, but people are welcome to stay longer if they wish. We also offer abseiling in beer can alley!

Safety Precautions Before Abseiling Cape Town
The basic rules and safety precautions:
1. Always check that the rope is in good condition and free from damage [no cuts or frays; no kinks, especially at the ends.
2. Never abseil when someone is climbing above you.
3. Use a safety harness that is in good condition, use gloves to protect your hands from rope burn especially when you are abseiling quickly.
4. Check the anchor point before starting the descent and make sure it is secure and will not move or be accidentally knocked out of place. Make sure both anchor points are secure.
5. Have two people belay you down the cliff-face with another person acting as a spotter – this will allow one person to be at the top of the descent, one person to monitor your progress from halfway up and one person on the ground ready to assist if required. The climber must bring all their own equipment including shoes, harness, helmet and any other equipment.
6. Always check with the person on top of the abseil that they are ready to commence with your descent before you start down.
7. The climber must have their own safety system in place once they have started the descent. If you are uncomfortable about doing this, do not abseil.
8. Make sure you know your knot-tying and how to use a belay device properly before you attempt any form of climbing activity.
9. Check the descent route for loose stones, plants, soil etc that may cause a slipping hazard and remove these items if necessary. This is particularly important in natural areas where there may be animal burrows in the face of the cliff.
10. Make sure you use a descent device such as an ATC, figure eight or belay plate attached to your harness and roped above you so that it will hold if you fall on the abseil.
11. Do not abseil in a gully or off a ledge as there will be nothing to stop you from falling all the way down.
12. Do not abseil if there is any wind – it could catch you and blow you into the rock face, causing injury or worse.
13. Make sure that your belongings are securely attached to your person or left with the person on top of the cliff. They will not be able to retrieve your equipment if you fall and it could cause injury or death to someone below if anything comes loose, gets tangled or snagged during your descent.
